Absences
Please call the school and let us know if your child will be absent. Please be aware of our school policy on what is an excused absence versus an unexcused absence. Students should have no more than three unexcused absences per year.

Arrivals and Departures

School begins at 8:20 and ends at 2:22

School ends at 1:17 on early release and minimum days
Please be aware of our parking lot rules to ensure the safety of our students.


Back to School
The first few weeks of school will be spent getting to know each other and becoming familiar with new routines. We are conducting quite a bit of assessments to understand how best to meet the needs of your child.

Birthdays
We love recognizing someone’s special day. If you would like to send something into school to celebrate please make it a non edible such as stickers or pencils. Items may be passed out at the end of the day.

Backpacks
Beacon Park teachers are asking that students do not bring a rolling backpack.

Book Orders
Every month or two, we will be sending home book order forms for you and your child to look over. These clubs offer wonderful books at reduced prices – what a great way to build your home library! Orders will be conveniently available online.

Book Sponsors
At Back to School night We will ask for Scholastic Book Sponsors. If you would like to sponsor our class once a month and send in a donation check, I will buy books for our classroom library. We welcome sponsors starting at $10.

Challenges
We will be challenging your child in and out of school. You will find optional homework activities that can stretch your child’s thinking

Clothing
Students need to wear appropriate, comfortable clothing and shoes to school. Please put names on coats, sweaters, and book bags.

Communication
Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to write a note, email or call. Our website is updated frequently with important upcoming dates and announcements.

Conferences
Mandatory Fall goal setting conferences are held in the fall. Spring conferences are optional unless you hear from me. We’re always available before or after school when needed, please contact your teacher for an appointment.

Differentiation
In our school, we differentiate instruction, which means that students are taught based on instructional level as well as interest. Groupings change frequently, as students’ levels increase, or if they have an abundance of or less prior knowledge of the subject we’re about to learn.

Donations
We always welcome donations to our classroom. Our classroom would benefit from any donation you can offer. We love to inherit older technology that is no longer being used in your home.

Engagement
We know that our students today do not learn the same way as they did 10 years ago. The age of abundance of technology has changed the way we need to approach education. At Beacon Park we have developed a program that engages your child to learn in a way that is right for him or her.

Field trips
You will be notified of field trips ahead of time. We will send home a permission slip with all the necessary material Please return the permission slip in a timely manner.

Google Docs
All IUSD students have Google Apps for Education accounts. Many of our collaborative projects will be done through Google Docs. We would recommend sitting down with your child and have them show you everything they are capable of .

 

Handwriting
Even though we live in a digital world, handwriting is still an important topic. We expect my students to take pride in their handwriting and work hard to insure their writing is neat and legible.

Homework
The purpose of homework is to give students those extra minutes of learning to enhance their success at school. The research is showing that in the primary grades what really matters is reading and math facts. We will not be giving an abundance of homework but we do expect you to be reading nightly, with or without a parent, and practicing math facts in any way that you find helpful. Please visit our homework section for optional extension homework activities.

Internet use
We will be following the National Educational Technology Standards (NETS) this year. Please be aware that we plan to make sure your child is a capable 21st century learner. We will work on a variety of skills accessing the content while learning about digital citizenship, technology as tools, and ways to promote creative and innovative thinking as well as problem solving.

iPads
We will use iPads for a variety of creative projects throughout the year. Our access to iPads is limited so any donations in this area are welcomed!

Journals
Writing is an important skill for our students to learn. Journal writing will be done regularly to practice skills worked on in class. Journal writing will be done to a prompt with specific expectations. This is different from Writer’s Workshop in which students will be writing based on topics of interest.

 

Keepsake
We may create a digital portfolio this year. Please look for special pieces of work coming home that you will want to keep forever.

New Students
We always welcome new students to our classroom! A helpful student will be willing to show our new students around our classroom and our school.

Organization
This year you will not have desks to store all of your materials. You will be expected to keep your materials organized so that you can easily access them throughout the day depending on our activities.

 

PTA
Your involvement in and out of our classroom helps tremendously. Our school is enhanced by the commitment and wonderful parent involvement. QR Codes
QR codes are popping up all over the place, and now even in the classroom. If you own a smartphone be sure to download a QR Code Reader to participate in the many fun things that can be found around our classroom. The students and I will be posting QR codes around our classroom to link to fun projects, videos, or photos. Make sure your smart phone is ready by Open House so that you can scan away!

Reading
I will be working with a daily 5 and CAFE model for reading instruction. This will be done with homeroom students as well as my GROW students. Children will be busy completing meaningful literacy tasks within the daily 5. The choices will be:
1. Read to self
2. Work on writing
3. Word Work
4. Listen to reading
5. Read to Someone
CAFÉ is what we study during this time. CAFÉ is an acronym for the four major components of reading. They are:
C for Comprehension
A for Accuracy
F for Fluency
E for Expanding Vocabulary
The children will learn reading strategies within each category. These strategies will become tools for the children to use to help themselves become better readers and writers. I will keep you informed when new strategies are introduced. Then, when you read with your child at home, you will be able to reinforce these concepts.

Report Cards
In an effort to reduce our impact on the environment, the district made the decision to make report cards available electronically in all of our schools. Your child’s report card will be available via the MyIUSD Parent Portal located at https://my.iusd.org/

Science
This year in science will will be looking at matter and it’s interactions, plants and animal habitats, how plant seeds are dispersed, and geology

Social Studies
Our focus this year is on People Who Make a Difference. Students in grade two explore the lives of actual people who make a difference in their everyday lives and learn the stories of extraordinary people from history whose achievements have touched them, directly or indirectly. The study of contemporary people who supply goods and services aids in understanding the complex interdepen­dence in our free-market system.

Tardies
If your child is late to school, please send them to the classroom if they arrive between 8:30 and 8:40. After 8:40 your child must sign in at the office.

Tests
Tests that are sent home should be reviewed with your child. Review missed questions as well as correct ones. Sign and return the test the following day.

Thursday Folders
A parent communication folder will be sent home every Thursday. This folder will contain graded work, notes from me, school flyers, and other miscellaneous paperwork. It is your child’s responsibility to return the folder every Friday, however you may have to help out a bit in the beginning until it becomes routine

Toys
Students are not permitted to bring toys to school. If students are sharing an item in class, the toy must be stored in the backpack at all times. Toys may not be out on the playground. We are not responsible for any toys or other items that are lost at school.

Video
This year we will be participating in a variety of projects that will include video. Students with parent permission will be able to have their videos posted on our class website. All students will be in videos that will be shared within our classroom. Videos connected to QR codes in the classroom are on a private server and not accessible to others outside of the classroom.

Visitors
All guests (including familiar faces) must first sign into the front office.

Volunteers
Volunteers are an important part of our children’s education. Having parent involvement is what makes our school so great! Please check at Back to School Night for volunteer opportunities.

 

Writer’s Workshop
During Writer’s Workshop our class writes together (interactive writing) and independently (journals and book making). Students are involved in explicit demonstrations of the connection between reading and writing. They learn concepts of how written language works while engaged in the writing process. I have high expectations for writing. For more information on our writing process click here.

Xerox copy
I am going to try to do my best to limit on copies this year so I will not be sending many notes home in a paper format. Please let me know if you need hard copies rather than digital ones.

Order your yearbook early.

Zzz!
Make sure that your child is getting plenty of rest. Setting and keeping a bedtime is a wonderful gift you can give your child. It will help them be their best at school.
